Please join us tonight at the Standard Hotel Downtown - 6th and flower downtown los angeles to share in celebration for Sean Flanery's promotion to blackbelt. State at the door that you are with hbjj or hollywood brazilian jiu-jitsu. Please arrive if possible around 7 or 7:30.

Noon class will still go on, but academy will be closed for the remainder of the day. All other days are normal. We will all be down at the Mundial's coaching the team!!! The list of competitors is as follows:

| On Sunday, May 4th, I received a windfall of currency. It's nothing that can be deposited in a bank, or used to purchase a car, but the kind that you keep with you in your pocket for the rest of your life. It's a currency that there is no exchange rate for because anyone in possession of it is forever unwilling to relinquish it for any price or reason. To say that I am honored would be an understatement, but to say that I am honored to receive my windfall from Shawn Williams would not only qualify for the "understatement of the year" competition, but it would win by a comfortable margin. Having said that, to say that I am the first person EVER to receive it from Shawn Williams is...well...I can't properly translate it as of yet. I do, however, know that I wouldn't trade this feeling for the world, and that it is one of the most valuable things I possess. On Sunday, May 4th, 2008, Shawn Williams handed me a Black Belt, and it was one of the proudest days of my life. -Sean Patrick Flanery |

| On Sunday May 4 during the John Danaher seminar, Flanery was awarded his Blackbelt!!! What a HUGE accomplishment, and of course very well deserved!! It is my first promotion to Blackbelt and I couldn't be more proud of the practitioner that he has become. As much of a special day it was for Flanery, it was as equally special for me. We will have a formal ceremony in the next few weeks. I will post all the info and make announcements in class once it is finalized. Congratulations to you Sean! |

We had 10 competitors at the 2008 Pan Ams.
Rachel, Asia, Ben, Kevin, Jose, Mellissa, Alex, Samir, Taka, Chio, Warren, and Sam. Everyone competing continues to improve both in technique, competition strategy, and the mental aspect. Jose won two matches in Whitebelt Adult division. Alex won his first match using great legwork in the guard. Samir placed 2nd in the Master II lightweight purple belt division. Chio placed 3rd in Adult/open lightweight purple belt division finishing 3 of his opponents with armbar. Warren went 1-1 in the purple belt adult absolute class. The following day Warren won 3 in a row before loosing a close match to the eventual winner of the middle weight division. Warren earned a 3rd place in adult purple belt middle weight. Sam had a great match against a legend of the sport Soca. In the absolute blackbelt masters division same dropped another very close match to a huge opponent. John Danaher will be doing a seminar her on the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. It will be two days, approximately 3 hours per day. One day will include gi techniques and the other day will be exclusively no gi. Cost for Hollywood Brazilian JIu Jitsu/Team Renzo Gracie L.A. members is $75/day. Right now the seminar is only open to our members. In about one week we will open remaining spots to the public. As of today, April 4th, we have 22 spots for Saturday and 24 spots for Sunday.
John is a very innovative instructor and a great practitioner. He has co-authored two best selling books on Jiu Jitsu. He has trained/cornered UFC champions Matt Serra and George St. Pierre. He is a head instructor at the Renzo Gracie academy in Manhattan. This is his first Seminar in the USA. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the world's best instructors!!! |

A couple of weeks ago (March 29th) Renzo Gracie visited us. He was in town so he stopped by and taught the Saturday class. He showed 3 great techniques and talked with many of us. It was great to see Renzo here and we hope he comes back soon!
